Ted signed up for three years in the Sherwood Foresters. He signed up with his child hood best friend, Bob Barnet. They were based during that time in places such as Malta and Libia.

Both Ted and Bob achieved marksman status, meaning they earned a 'couple of bob' more on their army pay.

Ted' s rank was drummer and he also played the bugle, the last post was his favourite to play.
